The former special counsel Robert K. Hur, denounced by Democrats for his unsparing description of President Biden’s memory lapses, had one of his own during his testimony on Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee. Representative James R. Comer, a Kentucky Republican, made passing reference to Dana A. Remus, a Democratic lawyer who had served as White House counsel under Mr. Biden from January 2021 to July 2022. Mr. Hur crinkled an eyebrow and corrected him: No, he said, she occupied that post under President Obama. The misstep was an isolated moment in an otherwise poised and precise appearance by Mr. Hur, 51, who was testifying about his report on the investigation into Mr. Biden’s handling of classified documents. Mr. Hur, a Trump-era Justice Department official known among former colleagues for keeping a cool head in high-stress, high-stakes situations, incited a furor after describing the president as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

CHANGE, by Édouard Louis. Édouard Louis (né Eddy Bellegueule) burst onto the French literary scene in 2014 at the age of 21 with “The End of Eddy,” an autobiographical novel that announced, with aplomb, his own abnegation. Raised in a rural village in northern France, Eddy grew up not only miserably poor, but miserably gay and miserably bright. But for readers of “The End of Eddy,” let alone the entire Louis canon, “Change” feels stuck in a familiar rut. “Need I tell you again how it all started?” Louis wonders near the beginning of “Change.” The answer, again, is yes.

President Biden curses. It drew a spasm of attention last week, when Politico reported that in private, on the subject of Donald Trump’s depravity, Biden is hardly at a loss for words — he’s ready with four-letter ones. If that doesn’t give Biden a point of connection with tens of millions of Americans, I don’t know what does. He should go after Trump more viscerally. How — and how often — to talk about Trump?

But it also sets the stage for additional appeals from the Republican ex-president that could reach the U.S. Supreme Court and result in further delays. The judges gave Trump until February 12 to ask the Supreme Court to pause the ruling. The appeals court took center stage in the immunity dispute after the Supreme Court in December said it was at least temporarily staying out of it, rejecting a request from Smith's team to take up the matter quickly and issue a speedy ruling. But the court could yet still decide to act on a Trump team appeal, adding to the uncertainty of a trial date. The high court declined the request, leaving the matter with the appeals court.

New York CNN —The Never Trump movement might be on life support, but one of the outlets that it gave birth to is flourishing. George Conway, the conservative attorney whose sharp legal analysis and unsparing political commentary launched him from a well-known D.C. politico into a household name during the Trump administration. “The legal questions surrounding Trump are going to be an enormous part of what happens in 2024,” Longwell noted to me. “As Trump has absorbed the Republican Party, there is less of a mission over how to save it. “When you’ve been a part of the conservative movement and seen how much it has changed, you have no temptation to say these things are equivalent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker moved Tuesday to force a vote this week on expelling Rep. George Santos from the House, calling it a necessary step if Republicans fail to take action in light of the recent ethics report that found Santos blatantly stole from his campaign and deceived donors. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., brought back to the floor legislation he first introduced in February to force the expulsion vote. “Whatever it takes to get that vote this week, is what we're doing,” Garcia said. Expelling Santos, a Republican from New York, would require support from at least two-thirds of House members voting. Santos has rejected any suggestion he step down before an expulsion vote.

Over the past few years, hundreds of families and school districts around the country have sued big tech companies on the grounds that the hypnotic properties of social media popular with children have left too many of them unwell. Tech companies, claiming First Amendment protections, have sought to get these sorts of suits quickly dismissed. But on Tuesday, a federal judge in California issued a ruling to make that more difficult. Forty years ago, drunken driving was an epidemic, claiming the lives of young people, a seemingly unmanageable problem until a group of mothers committed themselves to pushing for laws that brought accountability. It was a pivotal moment in the modern history of public health, and, in the same way, 2023 is likely to be remembered as an inflection point in the health crisis surrounding social media.

After welcoming viewers in Spanish (the debate was simulcast on Univision), Calderón queried the Republicans through the night on weighty issues related to immigration, hate crimes, health care, and more. Reading the recent excerpt from McKay Coppins’s forthcoming biography of Mitt Romney of Utah, I was struck by the depth of the senator’s contempt and disdain for much of the Republican Party, including many of his colleagues in the Senate. He saved his harshest words, however, for those Republican senators who would do or say anything for political power and influence. What bothered Romney most about Hawley and his cohort was the oily disingenuousness. Hawley and Cruz “were making a calculation,” Romney told me, “that put politics above the interests of liberal democracy and the Constitution.”As for the latest crop of Republicans, Romney had this to say: “I don’t know that I can disrespect someone more than J.D. Romney was, after all, the first senator in American history to ever vote to remove a president of his own party from office.

Why TV news executives are having a brutal year in 2023

In his place, CBS announced Monday that Wendy McMahon will be chief executive and president of CBS News, the network’s local stations, and CBS Media Ventures. The formidable task is reflective of the extraordinary challenges traditional media outlets are facing amid a period of rapid and existential change to their business models and advertising woes. Increasingly, there is no longer a single powerful media executive tasked with solving for the less-than-ideal set of circumstances. The industry veteran noted that there is less of a focus on making splashy — perhaps at times risky — moves to build for the future among the C-suite ranks. Instead, there is a mounting emphasis on slashing costs to best position the mammoth media companies for the inevitable decline of linear television.

Fitch downgraded the US's credit rating on Tuesday, citing "steady deterioration in standards of governance." The downgrade comes two months after the latest debt ceiling battle and brinkmanship. Fitch's move echoes what S&P did in 2011 when that major rating agency downgraded US credit in the wake of a different debt ceiling fight. However, Fitch's assessment comes after the lastest deal — which guarantees some debt ceiling relief through the next presidential election — was brokered. "They've repeatedly put the full faith and credit of our nation on the line, and now, they are responsible for the second downgrade in our credit rating," they wrote.

Barry Diller Ends Talks to Sell The Daily Beast

Mr. Diller, the chairman of the digital media company IAC, said on Friday that The Daily Beast — a digital tabloid known for its aggressive political and media coverage — is not for sale. Until recent days, according to people with knowledge of the talks, he had been in discussions about a deal with Ankler Media, a start-up that has earned a reputation for its unsparing coverage of Hollywood elites since Janice Min, a longtime magazine editor, co-founded it early last year. “We did have negotiations with The Ankler, but we have withdrawn from them,” Mr. Diller, 81, said in a statement. “The Daily Beast is not for sale.”He did not elaborate on his plans for The Daily Beast, a publication that the magazine editor Tina Brown first edited in 2008 and that has earned plaudits for its journalism.

A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.
